exercises and overnight, at the central u.s. demand. that north korea denuclearize. this morning, the white house reacting to the news that north korea may pull out of next month's historic summit between president trump and kim jong un. >> this is something that we fully expected. the president is very used and ready for tough negotiations. and if they want to meet we'll be ready and if they don't, that's okay, too. >> it comes after north korea's foreign minister threatened overnight to pull the plug. if the u.s. insists on unilateral nuclear abandonment. the official adding, we are no longer interested in a negotiation that will be all about driving us into a corner and making a one-sided demand for us to give up our nukes. the statement comes hours after the north koreans criticized preplanned joint military exercises between the u.s. and south korea. currently under way as a quote provocative military ruckus. and indefinitely canceling planned high-level talks with

south korea. notifying them by fax. just hours before a scheduled meeting at the dmz. the peace house where kim jong un met south korea's president last month. the state department saying that kim jong un had previously indicated he had understood the need for the routine drills and insisting the u.s. hasn't heard anything directly from pyongyang to indicate a change of plans. >> we will continue to go ahead and plan the meeting between president trump and kim jong un. >> the threat comes amid the backdrop of cooling tensions in recent weeks with north korea agreeing to talks over denuclearization. vowing to close a nuclear test site next week. all this after releasing three american detainees. critics have cautioned north korea can't be trusted. former c.i.a. director john brennan telling nbc news the turn of events is unsurprising. for his part, president trump has insisted he's prepared to walk away. >> if the meeting is not fruitful, i will respectfully

leave the meeting. >> it's not clear whether kim jong un is seriously considering pulling out of the summit or just trying to show strength to his own people. a senior white house official tells me they're in contact with their counterparts overseas. savannah? >> kristen at the white house. joining us now is nbc's national security analyst jeremy bash. that's the question that kristen poses, whether north korea is just posturing, or whether this was all looking a little too easy? >> it looks like a classic bait and switch. they feel like they've got the president on the hook now they're going to ask for more concessions. what was so stunning about last night's statements was that basically the north koreans were saying we'll talk to you, but we ain't giving up our nuclear weapons. that's a major departure. >> if you were a betting man, betting on whether or not the summit would happen, where would your money be? >> hoda, i would be cautious if i were the administration. there's a history here in 1990s, the north koreans said they would give up their nuclear program. they cheated. in 2005 they announced to the

world they were stopping their nuclear weaponization program. tested their first weapon in 2006. there's a precedent here by north korea for cheating, reversing. the president has to proceed with extreme caution. >> a lot on the line there for both parties. thank you very much. to another major story this morning, those deadly storms that have swept across the country, battering the midwest and the east coast. and leaving hundreds of thousands without power. nbc's kristen dahlgren is in hamden connecticut for us, good morning. >> good morning, people here waking up to big problems and not just like this. hundreds of thousands are still without power, the mayor saying some of those downed power lines may still be live. so they're worried about that. four are confirmed dead. people say this is the worst they've seen here in years. the menacing storm clouds rolled in like a scene from a hollywood blockbuster. turning day to night. the skies opened up. pounding the region with brutal rain.

whipping winds. whoa! >> and heavy hail. some the size of golf balls. the relentless storm wreaking havoc across central states. >> a lot of intense lightning with this damaging winds with this system. >> more than 400,000 customers lost power. in new fairfield, connecticut, downed power lines started smoking. then caught fire. trees were ripped from the ground as the ferocious winds took their toll. from this new jersey neighborhood, to several connecticut towns. where there were reports of suspected tornadoes. >> it sounded like a freight train. and we could see trees falling around, all around. never seen anything like it. >> overnight in frederick county, maryland, flash flooding caused traffic nightmares. the powerful system being blamed for several deaths. in newberg, new york, an 11-year-old girl was killed when a tree fell on the suv she was in. and a man in pennsylvania was

killed when a tree came crashing down on his car. the nypd's harbor unit rescuing three boaters off the coast of manhattan. the group calling 911 after they were caught in the storm's intense winds. evening commuters also feeling the storm's effects. new york's grand central terminal packed wall to wall with travelers trying to get home after train service was suspended because of dangerous conditions. hundreds of flights in the region were also canceled. >> all the flights are canceled. we're kind of stuck here. >> stranded flyers forced to play the waiting game. well officials will be out here later today to see if they can confirm that these were tornado touchdowns. but if that's your car, it doesn't matter what they call it, you have a lot of clean-up ahead. >> no kidding. kristen, thank you. meantime there are growing signs that a major eruption of hawaii's kilauea volcano is imminent. the alert has been raised to the

highest level as massive ash plumes rise. miguel almaguer is there with more. miguel, good morning. >> good morning, we've a safe distance from the volcano. today we have a clear view of one of those fissures, spouting lava and fireballs into the air. we can hear loud explosions. this, as the most serious threat may actually be several miles away. rumbling to life again -- kilauea's crater shooting towering plumes of smoke and ash 12,000 feet into the air. >> it's dramatic. >> the explosions inside where this lava lake is sinking -- a precursor say geologists to an imminent major eruption that could send ballistic boulders at any time into the air. miles away, in residential neighborhoods -- new geysers of lava. another fiery fissure like this one splitting the earth open.

first responders issuing new mandatory evacuations. even where there is no lava and smoke, the damage has been done. hot cracks like these are everywhere. >> this is not -- where we might have two or three days of no action and all of a sudden a new vent pops up. >> slow-motion disaster impossible to predict officials worry roads, escape paths could be cut off by new lava lakes. that suddenly erupt. >> it's just a dangerous situation. that you can see how quickly you might need to get out. >> with toxic gases seeping from the ground, the air in some communities could kill in minutes. this is what they call condition red. dangerous levels of sulfur dioxide. this morning, double trouble from kilauea. lava and toxic gases threatening low-lying communities. while its crater threatens to blow.

perhaps an explosion like we've never seen before. as officials brace for a explosion at mount kilauea, they pount to what happened at mount st. helens in 1980 when that volcano exploded, day turned to night and ash covered several small cities in a surrounding area. they fear we could have a similar scene here in hawaii. savannah? >> i'm glad you said you were a safe distance. we can see the lava in the dark behind you. so stay careful and thanks for the report. appreciate it. now to a mysterious explosion at an office building in southern california. the blast killed at least one person and injured several others, and this morning investigators want to know if it was intentional. nbc's jo ling kent is at the scene with more. >> good morning. the explosion happened behind me down the street on the first floor of a medical office building. it blew out windows and wall and even rattled the kids at a day care across the street.

and now the atf and the fbi are working together with local law enforcement to figure out how this happened. this morning investigators scrambling for answers. after a mysterious explosion ripped through this california medical building, killing one woman inside. new pictures obtaineded by nbc news showing the extent of the damage from inside the building. >> unit arrived on scene, found an obvious explosion with debris in the street. >> officially authorities say it's unclear if the blast was intentional or accidental. federal law enforcement sources tell nbc news the explosion was the result of an intentional detonation. adding the device used appeared to have been contained in some sort of package. >> we're going to be collecting as much evidence as we possibly can to determine what actually occurred inside. >> at least three other people were injured in tuesday's explosion.

>> at least two women came walking out of it and they were dripping blood and face full of ash, hair completely signinged. >> the powerful blast so strong firefighters evacuated a day care across the street, taking some young children out by hand and rolling babies out in their cribs. >> i heard a big crash, i thought it was a garbage truck. >> none of the children were injured. >> i just started crying, i'm so happy all the kids are safe. >> a tweet, the orange county sheriff's department is pushing back on whether or not the explosion was indeed intentional. meanwhile, the bomb squad has been here, they've rendered this area safe and clear. but understandably a lot of parents over at the day care keeping their kids home today. guys? >> you can manage why, jo ling kent, thank you. to a frightening new mid air emergency. the windshield of a chinese passenger jet shattering during a flight and nearly sucking the co-pilot out of the cockpit.

nbc's gadi schwartz has more. >> experts say it's incredibly rare for something like this to happen. but this is the second time in a month that somebody has been pulled out of a plane in this case the exploded and the pilot was almost sucked out of the aircraft. a crisis in the cockpit at 32,000 feet. a sichuan passenger jet heading from china to tibet started to lurch, the temperature inside plummeted to negative 40 degrees, investigators say one of the cockpit windshield shattered the cockpit sucked head-first through the hole. his seat belt preventing him from being pulled out. the pilot was able to get him back in the plane and begin emergency landing. passengers describe food and debris bouncing around the cabin. on the ground, the gaping hole where the windshield was. and inside the cockpit. look at the plane's damaged holes. the co-pilot's shirt ripped to tatters.

none of the passengers on the flight were hurt and the airline issued a statement thanking pilot and the crew for their actions. last month a southwest airline passenger was killed after her window was shattered by shrapnel by an exploding engine and she was pulled halfway out of the plane. >> it's just about unprecedented. >> if god forbid something like that does happen on a flight that you're on there's a breach at a window, what are you supposed to do if you're on that flight? >> there's a whooshing effect, that lasts until the pressure stabilizes, even though you may have heard it so many times before, it's important to pay attention when they start talking about those oxygen masks. at 40,000 feet without a mask you have about 18 seconds of what they call useful consciousness before you start to pass out. savannah, hoda. >> we learned before, you got to put the mask over your nose and your mouth. >> nose and mouth. >> gadi, thank you. let's talk about those powerful storms and what's

ahead, we have al roker at the big wall, hey, al. >> thank you for getting your first weather from us, we're looking at more wet weather from new york into florida today. and it's just going to keep coming. why? we've got a moist set-up here. low pressure meandering up into the southeast. a bermuda high off the east coast and that is pumping up lots of moisture and so we have a risk of flooding stretching from new york down to the panhandle of florida. we're going to watch this system this stationary front just kind of hang in there. and just so the low pressure system gets caught up along it. we're looking for a lot of moisture for the east coast. scattered storms through tomorrow, isolated flooding. the storms will continue into the late week and on into the weekend. in fact look at through saturday, what we're looking at rainfallwise, down around florida, we're looking about two inches, but in the northeast and mid-atlantic. significant river flooding is possible. storm totals could exceed more than six inches of rain by saturday. and it continues right into sunday as well. we're going to get to your local

southbound 280 is jammed towards the scene. only one lane causing the slowdown. a lot of slowing from lee towards 87. but northbound really the commute from san jose, slower drive north 880 and 17 towards san carlos where there's a crash on the shoulder. the rest of the bay moves well. the problems are in the south bay. that vehicle has cleared. back to you. >> and we're watching for some weather that's starting to fire up here in solano county. isolated thunderstorms and lightning around the american canyon area. we'll have that slight chance as we go through the next couple of hours and it's going to be a fairly cool day reaching into the upper 60s for san jose and much of the inland area. 63 degrees in santa rosa and san francisco today up to 70 degrees or 60 degrees but it will be warmer heading into the weekend. >> thank you very much.

meghan's mom is coming. this morning, new pictures of her leaving her los angeles home, carrying an outfit by british designer, burrberry. and driving to l.a.x. through a v.i.p. entrance. but meghan's dad, confirm big text, he is back in the hospital. instead of walking his daughter down the aisle at st. george's chapel, this morning, he's going into surgery, he says. doctors operating to clear blocked arteries after he suffered chest pains on monday. >> him being under stress is true. and he sent me a message that he was undergoing heart surgery. we're all hoping he pulls through this now and can still go to the wedding. >> reporter: for meghan, the worrying news coming ahead of her wedding day, following intense pressure from family and the media, including a scandal over these allegedly staged paparazzi pictures of her dad, coming as the palace warned photographers to stop harassing him. tmz reporting that meghan tried

to reach her father monday, sending a text, i love you. mr. markel quoted as saying, i hate the idea of missing one of the greatest moments in history and walking my daughter down the aisle. speculation that meghan's mom will give away meghan, instead. she met prince harry in canada when the couple made their first appearance together. here, sharing a box with meghan and harry at the invictus game. >> her mother is the top contender to walk her down the aisle. we had precedence of queen victoria walking her youngest daughter down the aisle. >> reporter: meghan's future father-in-law, prince charles, may be another obvious choice. but william has spent more time with meghan and knows herbert. the soon-to-be american princess could walk into the chapel all on her own. the days before harry and

including one who helped harry after the death of diana. and what is great, is meghan is fully represented among these little girls and boys. the mulroneys will have their children as part of the bridesmaids and page boys. they are related to a former canadian prime minister. and california is represented. their children will be taking part. meghan spent time at christmas in 2016 with the family. she knows them well. friends of her children will be there. >> keir, a lot of people are asking about her dad, whether he will or won't be there. this is a much more serious story. he's in the hospital. there's a lot going on. we can only imagine what meghan is going through. is the palace doing anything to help in this situation? >> reporter: well, we know from history that we don't know what is really going on behind the palace walls.

you can imagine that the royals, including the queen, will be trying to rally around as much as they can. for meghan, this has to be incredibly difficult to hear reports and getting news that her father appears to be undergoing a heart surgery at this crucial time. the idea that he will be able to be here seems unlikely. there are those who say, hoda, this is another example, honestly, of the royals not really being able to step in there and help relatives and those close to people who are joining the royal family. you think back, though, to that engagement interview where harry said, i've tried to tell meghan how difficult it's going to be, the challenges she's taking on. anyway, back to the fun. of course, it will be a fun day on saturday. i'm hearing that al will be out and about in the crowds on saturday.

who are thinking about or attempting suicide. more than 115,000 cases over the past decade, they found a dramatic increase. this morning, troubling new nationwide numbers on children and suicide. new research says hospital visits for suicidal thoughts and actual attempts more than doubled, including by 175% between 2008 and 2015 alone. half the cases, children between the ages of 15 and 17 years old. two-thirds of them girls. doctors say school is playing a central role. >> we did see an uptick, usually about six to eight weeks after school started. the rates of hospitalization are half of what they are in july than october. >> reporter: and the numbers are only growing. youth suicide rates are up 24% over the last 15 years. and researchers say suicide remains the third-leading cause of death among american adolescents. the big question is why?

there's no simple answer. >> some people have netheorized that social media has a play in all. >> reporter: cody had it all. a four-sport athlete, a loving family, a bright future. but inside -- >> i was feeling sad every day and i didn't know why. and i didn't know how to talk about it. >> reporter: because he says there's often a stigma when it comes to mental health. >> i thought that something men did was not talk about emotions or anything like that. i thought i could hide and bury it and never talk about it and go away. >> reporter: it built up and five years ago he tried to take his own life. he says depression does not discriminate. >> you can be successful and depressed. you can have a loving family like issurdepressed.

>> i didn't feel like i was a good mom. i had to start learning something new. and i want other parents to learn that sooner. >> reporter: now, a college junior, he will soon begin a ph.d. program in behavioral health. >> it is not a life sentence. you can get help. >> this is as scary as it is sad. what's the takeaway for parents, cynthia? >> it's hard to know if your kid is suffering from adolescent or growing up issues or whether they're serious problems and whether the child is having suicidal thoughts. parents should look for signs of depression, such as does your child seem more withdrawn? are they expressing less joy? showing less interest in activities they used to love? have sleeping or eating issues. all those are things you can talk about with your kid. if you're really worried, the national suicide prevention lifeline is there seven days a week, at 1-800-273-talk. one of the things the experts tell us is parents are afraid to

to the do it yourself projects, let's talk about some of the hot trends so far this year. what are some of them? >> well, there's a couple of touching on the royal wedding, which is a very hard act to follow. this is the glamour that home decor is left with. millennial pink is a big trend. having a daughter, you're familiar with. that pale dusty rose color. i like because it's androgynous. and interesting. it's nice. wicker is another big trend, which i think is a great material and texture to introduce because it makes every home feel well-traveled. >> is that year-round wicker? >> yeah. it's not like the typical wicker where it was white painted outside and cracked and crust i. a nice, natural wicker can blend with any aesthetic. and then unlacquered brass. and then, not '80s brass. but a different kind of brass. my husband is mortified, as i am, on the inside.

that brass that feels aged and worn is having a surge. >> let's start with the candlesticks. this is easy folks can do at home. candlesticks. >> i love a diy that takes three steps and you're not stuck all week building a bed. this was inspired by a high-end furniture line. and they're really inexpensive nuts and bolts from a hardware store. you screw them together and you can build out anything you want. >> that's funky. >> you build out your piece like so. and then, you spray paint it. >> i love to spray paint. i love to spray paint. >> you can do the honors. it's really simple. it's very simple. i did this, a girlfriend has a little boy. and i did a birthday party for him. and i did a clollage of them don the table. >> let's keep it moving. lamp shades, this is probably my

favorite on the table because this seems like something i can do. >> this is fool-proof and simple. this is a great way to add enough personality. these are thumb tacks. >> regular old-fashioned thumb tacks. >> if you're worried about the spikes, what's that tool called? >> what tool? >> a stapler remover. >> you can take it and bend the back. i'm good at diy. i'm good with the handy tools. >> thumb tacks. and what's this? >> this is electrical tape that you can take. you want to do the honors? you can apply straight on to the lamp shade. it's an easy way to add enough personality without running out and buying new lamp shades. this is an inexpensive way. >> you can change it seasonally. >> and these are old leather belts? >> old leather belts. one of my favorite projects.
